Around this time I started going to football matches.
I supported Port Vale. They were in the bottom half of the Third Division.
But in 1954 they got through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup - and I was there!
 
At least I was in the queue.

Stan has to queue for a ticket too
 

 
And, just like me, he doesn’t get one.  
Present day Vale supporters might be
interested to know that the pictures of
the Huddersgate Albion ground that
appear in the book are based on photos
of Vale Park as it was in the 50’s.

  The ticket offices were brand new then,
and considered to be ‘very modern’.
They’ve since had to be demolished.
